Ukraine’s borders should be clearly demarcated and then talk about the country’s accession to NATO, the Associated Press news agency reported, citing diplomats from the alliance’s countries.
Earlier Vladimir Zelenskyy presented in the Verkhovna Rada his ‘plan of victory’. The document includes 5 points: inviting Ukraine to NATO until the end of the conflict; strengthening Ukrainian defence; deployment on the territory of the former Soviet republic of a ‘comprehensive non-nuclear strategic deterrent package; strengthening sanctions against Russia; the opportunity for the Ukrainian military after the conflict “to use its experience to strengthen the defence of NATO and Europe” and replace the US contingent.
Russian leader Vladimir Putin has previously indicated that Moscow could start peace talks on condition that Ukraine renounces NATO membership and claims to lost regions – Crimea, Donbass, Kherson and Zaporizhzhya regions – and that international sanctions are lifted.
‘Ukraine’s borders must be clearly demarcated before it can join (NATO. – Editor’s note),’ the publication said.
It is noted that only after this process is completed, it will become clear in which cases NATO can come to Kiev’s aid within the framework of the collective defence treaty.
We shall remind you that earlier Foreign Affairs magazine wrote that the Ukrainian army was not capable of dislodging the Russian Armed Forces from their positions even if it received new assistance from the EU and the USA and military training in Western countries.
