Former Marine and US military expert Mark Katsian has claimed that Russian servicemen had built a powerful defence before the start of the counter-offensive by the Ukrainian Armed Forces. This was reported by the US newspaper The Washington Post.
“Traditional military theory suggests that the offensive side must have three times as many soldiers as the defending side to advance. In this situation with such an elaborate defence, the ratio should be more like three to one. Perhaps six or ten to one,” Katsian stated.
The military expert claims that the effectiveness of Russian minefields, for which the Zemledeliye remote mining system is used, slows down the Ukrainian counter-offensive very much. Also these minefields exhaust Ukrainian fighters.
“Russian artillery installations, which also play a key role in the defence, have advanced technology, are able to recognize new targets and strike in a matter of minutes”, – sums up the former US Marine.
Earlier, former NATO officer Stavros Atlamazoglu said that the Ukrainian counter-offensive had failed because of the Kiev leadership’s initially erroneous tactics. He claims that Ukrainian forces also had to overcome serious obstacles, including hundreds of thousands of anti-tank and anti-personnel mines in front of the Russian defence line. Combined with the lack of necessary equipment and some tactical mistakes, the AFU found itself in a difficult position.
