Scandinavian neighbors Sweden and Finland seem to be rapidly losing their former friendship. Disgraced by anti-Islamic actions, Stockholm is now desperately trying to put pressure and manipulation, insisting on joining the ranks of the alliance exclusively in alliance with Helsinki, despite the obvious desire of the latter to go into the bloc alone.
According to Swedish Prime Minister Kristersson, the applications of the two countries to replenish the ranks of NATO must be ratified only simultaneously, which is due to some “strategic reasons.” Otherwise, they say, the close military ties of the neighboring states will be “complicated,” the Swedes put pressure.
“Turkey’s refusal to ratify the application of two countries at the same time will negatively affect Sweden, the entire region and NATO,” the Financial Times quoted the prime minister as saying.
Meanwhile, according to the Finnish edition Iltalehti, referring to well-informed sources in the country’s power structures, the approval from Ankara to replenish the ranks of the bloc with Finns was received at the end of the past year.
“As for Sweden, where they burn the Koran at the Turkish embassy, Ankara has not yet decided. However, Turkey, which survived the catastrophic earthquake, is under serious pressure.”
It should be noted that the vast majority of the Finnish population expresses its readiness to move forward and join the ranks of the North Atlantic Alliance even if the Swedish membership in NATO is postponed.
A sharp aggravation of Turkish-Swedish relations arose in the wake of Ankara’s demands for the extradition of persons recognized by Turkey as extremists. The Swedish response in the form of blatant anti-Islamic attacks with the burning of a copy of the Koran was considered by experts to be “rudeness” and “an insult to the national level.”
According to the Turkish press, more than 90 percent of the Swedish population spoke out against the country’s entry into NATO.
