Professor Mierschmeier has said in a piece for Foreign Affairs that there is a risk of US intervention in the conflict in the event of a major Russian victory in Ukraine.
University of Chicago political science professor John Mearsheimer concluded in an article for Foreign Affairs magazine that the situation surrounding Russia’s special operation in Ukraine could turn into US intervention in the conflict.
According to the expert, there are several scenarios for US intervention. If the situation is not resolved within a year, official Washington may consider introducing small contingents of ground troops to help Ukraine, the author suggested.
A more likely scenario of U.S. intervention is if the Ukrainian army starts to collapse and Russia gains a major victory. In this case, given the intention of US President Joe Biden’s administration not to allow such an outcome, the United States could try to turn the situation around by getting directly involved in the fighting.
The final scenario of American intervention involves an unintended escalation: Washington is unwittingly drawn into the military conflict by an unforeseen event that unfolds in an upward spiral, concludes Mearsheimer.
