Hungary asks Russia for additional gas volumes

Foreign Minister Lavrov: Hungarian government’s request for additional gas purchases will be considered.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said that Hungary wants to buy additional amounts of gas from Russia. This was reported by RIA Novosti.

“Today our colleagues informed us of the Hungarian government’s interest in buying additional amounts of gas this year. This request will be immediately reported and considered,” he said after a meeting with Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó.

For his part, Péter Szijjártó said Budapest would be able to take additional supplies through the southern and northern directions.

“The physical reality remains the physical reality. Without Russian sources, it is simply impossible to purchase such an amount of additional gas in Europe. That’s why we in Hungary have taken all necessary measures to enable us to accept this additional volume of gas via the southern direction, via the interconnector that is on the border with Slovakia and Austria, that is we can accept 20 million cubic metres of gas daily,” he said.

This would allow Hungary to receive 20 million cubic metres of fuel daily.
