Saudi Arabia doubles fuel oil imports from Russia for power generation

Reuters quoted documents and traders’ statements as saying that Saudi Arabia doubled its imports of Russian fuel oil for power generation in the second quarter.

“Saudi Arabia, the world’s biggest oil exporter, more than doubled its imports of Russian fuel oil in the second quarter to provide power plants with electricity to meet summer cooling demand and free up its own oil for export,” the agency reported.

Reuters cited data from the Refinitiv Eikon ship tracking system. According to them, the kingdom imported 647,000 tonnes of Russian fuel oil through Russian and Estonian ports in April and June this year. Last year during the same period – 320 thousand tons. In total, Saudi Arabia imported 1.05 million tons of fuel oil from Russia in 2021.
