“Support for sovereignty”: Biden had a telephone conversation with Zelensky

US President Joe Biden had a telephone conversation with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky. The parties discussed the upcoming negotiations with Russia on security guarantees.

“The leaders expressed support for diplomatic efforts that will begin next week with a bilateral [US-Russian] dialogue on strategic stability. President Biden stressed the commitment of the United States and its allies and partners to the principle of “nothing about you without your participation,” the White House press service said.

Biden noted that Washington is ready to continue supporting confidence-building measures to de-escalate tensions in Donbass, as well as “active diplomacy to advance the Minsk agreements in support of the Normandy format.”

Recall that on the night of December 30-31, a telephone conversation took place between the President of the United States and Russian leader Vladimir Putin. The parties discussed the upcoming negotiations on security guarantees and agreed to keep their progress under personal control, as well as to maintain telephone contacts.

On January 10, talks between Russia and the United States on security guarantees will take place in Geneva. Earlier, the

Russian Foreign Ministry handed over to Washington draft agreements with the United States on security guarantees, as well as agreements on security measures for the Russian Federation and the member states of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
