UN Secretary General António Guterres has said some 14,000 nuclear weapons are stored around the world, posing a huge threat to humanity
“Humanity remains unacceptably close to nuclear annihilation. The time has come to dispel the cloud of nuclear conflict, to destroy the world’s nuclear weapons and usher in a new era of trust and peace”, – Guterres wrote on Twitter.
Today, September 26, is the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons. The day was established by the UN General Assembly in 2013.
Its main objectives are to raise awareness and educate the public about the threat posed by nuclear weapons to humanity and the need for their total elimination.
