Beijing has imposed sanctions against the US. Several individuals and organizations have fallen under restrictive measures. This was reported by the BBC
This was China’s response to sanctions by the Americans, which they imposed on officials in Hong Kong. The PRC list included former US Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, Human Rights Watch’s China director Sophie Richardson, Caroline Bartholomew, chair of the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission, and Adam King of the International Republican Institute.
Beijing made the decision just days before US Undersecretary of State Wendy Sherman’s proposed visit to China. She is to try to mend relations between the two powers. Under Joe Biden’s administration, it will be the highest American visit to the PRC so far.
White House press secretary Jen Psaki, during a briefing with reporters, voiced Washington’s official position on the matter:
“These actions are the latest examples of Beijing punishing individuals, companies and civil society organisations to send political signals.”
That the US regularly uses sanctions to put political pressure on states that refuse to comply with its orders, Psaki tactfully omitted.
