The authors of the article published in The National Interest believe that even an unintended conflict can become a reason for a nuclear war
According to Izvestia, the meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. leader Joe Biden is timely, as the two sides are on the verge of a nuclear arms race. The National Interest piece reveals that the situation involves Russia, the US and China. To prevent a catastrophe, the countries need to expand the use of crisis management tools. In doing so, it is important for the States to take a broader approach when negotiating with Moscow and Beijing, in particular discussing information warfare technology, missile delivery systems and defence.
“Anything that could undermine strategic stability, and this is not just about deployed offensive nuclear weapons, should be discussed with Russia and China”, – the article notes.
It adds that Russia, unlike China, should be of more concern to the U.S. because of the level of its nuclear arsenal. At the same time, the White House and the Kremlin have already confirmed the ability to implement agreements in this area, and negotiations between these parties will be more successful, experts say.
A reminder that Putin and Biden will meet on 16 June in Geneva. It will be the first face-to-face meeting of the heads of state since Biden took office as US president. The trip to Geneva will be the first foreign visit of the Russian president since January 2020.
