Mexico: Russian coronavirus vaccine one of the best in the world

Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard said Mexico appreciates the quality of Russian technology and is interested in packaging and even producing the Sputnik V coronavirus vaccine on its territory

“Yes <…>, there is significant progress [in this direction],” he said in response to a related question. According to the minister, the necessary work is being done through the Mexican state-owned pharmaceutical company Birmex. The foreign minister did not provide details of the negotiation process.

Ebrard stressed that Mexico “appreciates the quality of Russian technology” and the vaccines against coronavirus produced in Russia “are without any doubt among the best that are currently available in the world.

The Mexican foreign minister will soon travel to Russia on a working visit during which he will hold talks with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov. He is also expected to meet with representatives of entities involved in the development, production and distribution of the Sputnik V vaccine and to visit the Gamaleya National Research Centre for Epidemiology and Microbiology.

Mexico uses Sputnik V to protect the elderly population. The next batch of the drug was delivered to the Latin American country earlier this week.
