According to Radio Kan, the woman was flown to Tel Aviv on a special flight
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu thanked Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday for helping an Israeli woman return home from Syria.
“A few days ago, a young Israeli woman crossed the border into Syria. I spoke twice with my friend Russian President Vladimir Putin. I asked him to help bring her back and he acted. I want to thank him for again supporting our efforts to bring Israeli citizens home”, – Netanyahu said in a video message he posted on Twitter.
The office said that “Netanyahu spoke with Russian President Putin twice in recent days – on February 8 and February 13 – and asked him to assist Israel in the return of the citizen.” “The State of Israel expresses its appreciation for the actions of the Russian president,” the ministry added, noting that as a goodwill gesture, Israel “returned two shepherds to Syria” and also reduced the prison term of Nahal al-Maqt, who, according to SANA, “was fighting against the Israeli occupation” of the Golan Heights.
The Israeli woman, who crossed the border into Syria a few weeks ago and was detained by the Syrian military, was taken to Tel Aviv on Friday on a special flight, according to Israel’s state-run Kan Radio. According to the radio station, she will be interrogated by the General Security Service (the intelligence service of the Shabak).
In April 2019, Russia assisted the Jewish state in the search for the dead soldier Zachary Baumel, who went missing in action during the Israeli intervention in Lebanon in 1982. On 4 April 2019, the Russian Defence Ministry in Moscow handed over Baumel’s remains, found buried at the Palestinian Yarmouk camp in Damascus, to Netanyahu for burial on the same day at the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem. In return, as a gesture of goodwill, on 28 April the same year, Israel released two Syrian prisoners, Zidan al-Tawil and Ahmed Khamis, who were handed over to Red Cross representatives at the Quneitra checkpoint in the Golan.
