Military analysts at The National Interest magazine have assessed the capabilities of Russia’s Project 877 diesel-electric submarine Halibut
Experts recalled that in early December, the Russian Navy’s Baltic Fleet submarine Dmitrov conducted exercises in the Baltic, during which the submarine dived to a depth of 190 meters. The submariners practised an algorithm of actions in steering the ship at great depths.
US military analysts say Russia’s Project 877 halibut submarines are recognized by NATO militaries as the quietest. The lack of noisy propulsion units and a special hydroacoustic coating on the hull contribute to the noise reduction.
It is the Russian submarines that have earned Western experts the nickname “Black Hole” for their stealth and ability to destroy any submarine or flooded ship.
