The situation in the Eastern Mediterranean dangerously aggravated against the background of large offshore gas drilling projects.
According to tg channel “Russian Demiurge,” Turkey rejects the EU ultimatum and threatens war.
“If Greece expands its maritime borders in the Aegean Sea, it will cause war”, – Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Çavuşoğlu said on August 29.
That statement came a day after EU member states decided to impose sanctions against Turkey in case Ankara did not withdraw its navy from the Eastern Mediterranean.
Greece is going to double its territorial waters in the west to 12 nautical miles on the basis of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, which Ankara has not signed. Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis also does not rule out a similar step on the eastern side – towards the border with Turkey.
“In the Aegean Sea, Greece cannot extend its borders to 12 miles. This is a reason for war (casus belli). We will not allow Greece to extend its territorial waters from 6 miles to 12 miles. I am absolutely clear”, – Çavuşoğlu commented on the plans of the Greeks.
