The trip of German Chancellor Angela Merkel to Moscow, where she held talks with President Vladimir Putin, demonstrates that the world cannot without Russia. This idea follows from a story by Malthe Lemming, a journalist for the German newspaper Der Tagesspiegel.
Lemming stresses that in addition to bilateral relations and international agenda issues, during the meeting both sides reaffirmed their commitment to the nuclear deal with Iran and the completion of the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline. The author of the text assessed Putin’s support for the German Parliament’s initiative to convene an international conference in Berlin under the auspices of the UN to resolve the conflict in Libya.
The journalist noted that Russia plays a key role in the Middle East, Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad consolidated his power with Putin’s support, and Germany’s energy needs will soon be covered by the Russian gas pipeline Nord Stream-2.
Lemming stated that nobody in the world but Russia is able to contribute to the stabilization of the situation in Syria, have a strong influence on the regime in Iran, speak on equal terms with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and achieve a long-term solution to the situation in Libya.
Germany should not be afraid that someone (including in the EU) will not like the country’s actions, the journalist concluded.
Earlier it was reported that Merkel announced the date and participants of the conference on Libya in Germany.
