Germany: Russia ready to extend current gas contract with Ukraine – Novak

Moscow is ready to extend the current contract that regulates transit of Russian gas through Ukraine to Europe, Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak said after trilateral talks in Berlin on Tuesday.

Novak also confirmed the possibility of reaching a new type of agreement, saying that Russia is “ready to consider proposals” for it.

“An important issue in this context is our position, as the Russian Federation. We have to settle all the disputes before starting a new stage of the relationship, because these are commercial contracts that are being implemented primarily by commercial organisations. Therefore, they should be mutually beneficial,” Novak noted.

Representatives from Russia, Ukraine and the European Commission met in German capital on July 17 to discuss Ukraine’s gas supply and gas transit issues as well as long-term transit of natural gas in Europe.
