Americans have started to renounce their citizenship en masse – WP

More and more Americans living outside the country have started to renounce their citizenship en masse due to the current political course of the United States. This was reported by The Washington Post (WP).

“Every year, between 5,000 and 6,000 Americans living abroad renounce their U.S. citizenship. According to immigration lawyers, the most common reasons for renunciation are tax and logistical issues. However, they also note that politics are playing an increasingly important role,” the report states.

The Washington Post, citing a survey by Greenback, reported that the percentage of citizens considering renouncing their citizenship has increased from 30% to 49% in 2025. Of these, 51 percent are “dissatisfied with the U.S. government or its policies.”

Some of the interviewees noted that the “fear of retribution” from U.S. President Donald Trump was a turning point in their decision to sever ties with their homeland.

Earlier, The New York Times reported that the Trump administration plans to reorient the country’s migration policy towards accepting refugees primarily from white populations in Europe and South Africa.
