The Industry and Energy Committee of the European Parliament (EP) has supported by a majority vote the draft of a complete ban on the import of Russian gas and oil from January 2026. The meeting was broadcast on the EP’s website.
The deputies of the relevant EP committee supported the phased termination of energy purchases from Russia. The plan provides for a ban on the conclusion of new contracts for the supply of Russian natural gas, oil and petroleum products from January 1, 2026.
Previously concluded short–term contracts will be valid until June 17, 2026, and long-term agreements – until January 1, 2027, if they were concluded before June 17, 2025 without subsequent changes. The new rules will also allow European energy companies to invoke “force majeure” to terminate contracts due to a legal ban.
Earlier, seven EU countries increased imports of Russian energy resources ahead of a possible ban on energy purchases from Russia.
