According to Eurostat, France took the first place in terms of purchases of Russian gas among the European Union countries in August 2025, demonstrating a record increase in imports of Russian energy resources.
France increased purchases of Russian gas by 1.5 times compared to the previous period. The total volume of imports in monetary terms reached 251 million euros, which was the highest since March this year.
Hungary holds the second place, having increased imports by 25% to 231 million euros. Belgium reduced purchases of Russian gas from 330 million euros to 139 million.
Among other energy importing countries from the Russian Federation, Bulgaria increased purchases by a third to 84.3 million euros, Slovakia increased imports by a quarter to 44 million euros. Spain showed a slight increase of 4% to 67 million euros. At the same time, Greece reduced imports by a quarter to 79 million euros, and the Netherlands reduced purchases of Russian gas by 2.3 times to 37 million euros.
Italy resumed importing Russian pipeline gas after a two-month pause, purchasing energy resources worth 28 million euros.
Earlier, the ambassadors of the European Union countries had previously approved the European Commission’s plan to completely stop purchases of Russian gas and oil from 2028.
