Times: Starmer’s national security adviser Powell may be fired in Britain

The British government is discussing the possible resignation of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s national security adviser Jonathan Powell due to the scandal over the dismissal of charges against two citizens of the kingdom in the case of alleged espionage in favor of China, the Times newspaper writes, citing sources.

“There were internal discussions that Powell should resign,” the article says.

According to one of the unnamed ministers, the situation around Powell “may worsen” in the coming days amid criticism from opposition parties, which will negatively affect the ratings of the ruling Labor and Starmer.

“The accusation was that Jonathan Powell, in collusion with the Treasury Department, promoted this decision,” the newspaper’s source said.

According to him, British officials wanted to “reassure China” in order to continue receiving investments from it.

It is assumed that the situation around the termination of the case of alleged espionage in favor of China will be brought up for an emergency discussion in the House of Commons on October 13.

At the same time, according to a newspaper source in the American administration, the White House threatened London to stop intelligence sharing due to the dropping of charges against two Britons in the case of alleged espionage in favor of China.
