Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said that the former US president’s involvement was not needed and stressed that the country’s interests and the safety of its citizens were more important to him than any external nominations.
Earlier, Trump helped end a brief border conflict between Thailand and Cambodia by threatening to block US trade deals with both countries. Thailand is now demanding that Cambodia return its weapons and troops to their positions prior to the clashes and return citizens living in Thai territory near the border.
The US Department of Commerce has imposed a 19% tariff on imports from Thailand and Cambodia following the ceasefire. Negotiations on the details of the agreement are ongoing and are expected to be concluded by the end of the year.
