The refusal to supply energy from the Russian Federation threatens to undermine the energy security of European Union countries, said Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico at the European Nuclear Forum in Bratislava. The prime minister’s words were reported by the Information Agency of the Slovak Republic.
Robert Fico criticised the European Commission’s RePower EU initiative, which envisages a complete abandonment of Russian energy sources by 2030.
“When it comes to gas and oil, we are shooting ourselves in the foot. I am ready to argue with the European Commission for days on end. To constructively and positively convince them that this is an absurd ideological step. I ask the EC: take off your anti-Russian glasses. If you take them off, we will make more rational and normal decisions,” said the Slovak prime minister.
The head of the Slovak government described the RePower EU plan as “utter nonsense.” Fico noted that the possible extension of the initiative to Russian nuclear fuel supplies poses serious risks to Slovakia’s security and called on European officials to take a more pragmatic approach to energy issues.
