US House Speaker Mike Johnson reminded everyone that US President Donald Trump has the legal right to fire thousands of federal employees during the shutdown.
“Yes, he has that authority,” RIA Novosti quoted him as saying.
According to Johnson, Trump expressed dissatisfaction with the situation, but the American administration will need to determine which programmes and employees are “essential” during the shutdown.
Earlier, Politico reported that the White House would begin mass layoffs of US government employees.
