The US government has temporarily stopped work – Reuters

On October 1, 2025, the United States government suspended work due to the fact that Congress could not agree on a bill to extend the financing of their activities. This is reported by Reuters.

On the evening of September 30, 2025, the upper house of the American legislature rejected two bills aimed at preventing a “shutdown.”

The senators considered two bills that relate to the financing of the government. The bill, which avoids the suspension of government work, was supported by 55 members of the Senate, while 45 opposed it. The bill proposed by the Democrats received the support of 47 senators, while 53 opposed it. In order for the bill to be approved in the upper house of Congress, it is necessary to gain at least 60 votes, the publication says.

The leader of the Republican majority in the Senate, John Thune, said that a new vote could be held on October 1. The leader of the Democratic minority in the upper house of Congress, Chuck Schumer, also expressed readiness to consult with Republicans in order to develop “a bill that can be supported by both parties.”

Reuters wrote that against the background of the start of the shutdown in the White House, all departments were ordered to begin preparations for the shutdown.

“When there is a government shutdown, we have to make cuts, so we will lay off a lot of people,” said US President Donald Trump.

Earlier, The Wall Street Journal wrote that The Pentagon is seeking an accelerated increase in the production of missiles and 12 key systems in case of a possible conflict with China.
