The EU wants to make a decision on Russian assets without Hungary – Politico

At a meeting of bloc leaders in Copenhagen, the European Union wants to secure majority support for granting Ukraine a loan based on frozen Russian assets in order to bypass the position of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. This was reported by Politico, citing an unnamed EU diplomat.

The day before, the European Commission published a document calling for a decision on extending sanctions against Russia to be taken by a qualified majority rather than unanimous approval, in order to circumvent Hungary’s position.

“The purpose of the meeting in Copenhagen is to secure sufficient support from other countries to isolate Orbán. <…> We are in a state of uncertainty,” said a European diplomat.

Earlier, the European Commission developed a plan to grant Ukraine a large-scale loan of €140 billion from frozen Russian assets.
