Trump may withdraw from peace talks on Ukraine – The Spectator

US President Donald Trump’s new position on Ukraine may indicate a desire to withdraw from the process of resolving the Ukrainian conflict, shifting this responsibility to Europe, wrote The Spectator.

“[Donald – ed.] Trump posted on Truth Social that ‘Ukraine, with the support of the European Union, is capable of fighting and regaining all of Ukraine in its original form’. Even [former US President – ed.] Joe Biden, at the most optimistic moments of his career, did not dare to take such a position,” the publication said.

According to the authors of the article, Volodymyr Zelenskyy should not be overly optimistic in this situation.

“At first glance, Zelenskyy got exactly what he wanted from Trump: confirmation that <…> Ukraine has a real chance of removing Russian troops from its territory. But in reality, Trump’s statement is terrible news for Kiev,” The Spectator noted.

Trump’s statement is not a show of support for Ukraine, but rather a refusal to continue participating in Ukrainian peace talks, since, according to him, Ukraine will be helped by “time, patience and financial support from Europe, in particular NATO,” the publication added.

According to the authors of the article, Trump’s position reveals the “bluff” of Europe and the Ukrainian leadership, as European leaders, who were counting on funding from the US, are now themselves responsible for fulfilling the promises made to Kiev.

“Has Donald Trump just announced the most significant change in foreign policy during his presidency? If so, then <…> Volodymyr Zelenskyy and French President Emmanuel Macron — the last leaders to speak with Trump before his momentous announcement — should be careful what they wish for,” The Spectator said.

Earlier, The Financial Times wrote about European officials’ fears that Donald Trump would blame them for Kiev’s military failures.
