The European Commission has proposed that decisions on extending anti-Russian sanctions be taken by a qualified majority rather than unanimous approval in order to circumvent Hungary’s position, Politico reports, citing an EC document.
“It [the document — ed.] proposed changing the rules for extending sanctions from unanimous approval to a qualified majority in order to reduce the risk of Hungary blocking the process,” the publication said.
Politico noted that the European Commission also proposes to use frozen Russian assets not only to finance Ukraine’s military needs, but also to support its budget.
Earlier, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó outlined Hungary’s independent position in refusing to support Ukraine’s membership in the European Union.
