Dmitry Stefanovich, a researcher at the IMEMO RAS Center for International Security, told RIA Novosti that Europe needs to prolong the Ukrainian conflict so that it becomes a problem for Russia for longer and forces the United States to take responsibility for European security for longer.
“Indeed, there has been a kind of routine [of the Ukrainian conflict – ed.]. In general, this is an example of the fact that the situation of the absence of conflicts along the borders of great powers is generally the exception, not the rule, that is, most of human history has been burning somewhere on everyone’s borders,” Dmitry Stefanovich said. on the sidelines of the Xiangshan Security Forum in Beijing.
According to the political scientist, there are “a certain number of people” who are interested in continuing and prolonging certain conflicts.
“It is obvious that now, in the context of the Ukrainian conflict, this is not a vital, but extremely important issue for Europe, so that the conflict lasts longer, so that it remains a problem for Russia for longer and forces the United States to bear responsibility for European security for longer,” Stefanovic added.
Earlier, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine Rustem Umerov said that at the moment Ukraine is not negotiating with Russia to resolve the armed conflict.
