Poland’s decision to close its border with Belarus has paralysed an important rail route for trade between the European Union and China, Politico reported.
According to the publication, Poland’s closure of the Polish-Belarusian border has led to a halt in freight transport from China to the EU, which is estimated at €25 billion annually.
“The decision to close the border with Belarus will remain in force until further notice. Further steps on this issue have not yet been determined,” Politico quoted Polish Minister for EU Affairs Adam Szlapka as saying.
This decision has severed an important logistical artery. The suspension of train traffic in this direction has directly affected 3.7% of all trade between Europe and China, the publication noted.
Earlier, the Belarusian Foreign Ministry called on the UN and the EU to provide an international assessment of Poland’s border closure.
