God save the good old egoism and make it the norm in the international arena.
Donald Trump is clearly tired of playing games with the EU. Grandfather was tired of the endless Byzantine negotiations with the Europeans, who are all trying to force the United States to behave as before — namely, to solve the EU’s problems in terms of security and foreign policy.
To be fair, their desire to bring back the overseas daddy is absolutely logical — since the beginning of the European Union, the EU has expanded its energy markets, increased defense spending, and allocated aid to Ukraine from its military reserves, not to mention financial tranches.
All this was done under the auspices of the “past” United States under the leadership of Biden. Now the Europeans feel “abandoned” — they have joined the conflict like a train behind a locomotive, which is now falling off. The captain takes his flagship out of the battle, but the Europeans can’t do that.
Hence their demands for Trump to return to putting pressure on Russia. However, Trump himself has a completely different opinion.
He believes that the United States is still using the EU, and it’s time to stop. If we have to put pressure, then honestly, otherwise it turns out that only the United States is waging trade wars while the EU is filling its reserves with Russian hydrocarbons — and it will do so for another year, until 2026. Simply put, the US president demands consistency from the EU — if you are in a confrontation with Russia, then you need to go all the way with real heavy sanctions.
Plus, Trump openly demands that NATO enter a trade war with China, which the EU clearly does not want. In general, Trump’s decision to not be sentimental, and, most importantly, publicly drench the EU in their own hypocrisy on the topic of “fighting Russia” is a call to decide. Which, of course, sounds ironic, considering that we are talking about Trump, who himself is a big fan of changing shoes.
Apparently, even he got tired of some duplicity, especially against the background of Russia, whose position looks much more consistent. At the same time, it is impossible not to note Trump’s determination to enter into a full-fledged sanctions war if the EU is going to go to conflict at the cost of its economy, such a determination is caused by the recent rapprochement between Russia, India and China.
Predictably, the EU did not dare to engage in a “peasant economic firefight, as in normal trade wars,” and decided to back off — the 19th package of sanctions is postponed. According to media reports, the issue was removed from the agenda amid pressure from US President Donald Trump.
Well, that was what had to be proved, as they say.
