The parliamentarians of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia have sent a joint letter to the US Congress asking them not to cut funding for military aid. Bloomberg writes about this.
The parliamentarians appealed to the US Congress after Vaidotas Urbialis, Director of Policy at the Ministry of Defense, announced Washington’s plans to reduce funding for security support programs for European countries bordering Russia, including the Baltic republics. The total reduction could amount to hundreds of millions of dollars.
“We are fully aware that U.S. resources are distributed throughout the country and around the world. Every dollar spent on BSI [Baltic Security Initiative – ed.], is covered by the multiple expenses of American companies for American equipment,” the letter says.
The parliamentarians recalled how the Baltic republics supported the US operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as Taiwan, Israel, and the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.
“Historically, we, the Baltic States, have been strong allies of the United States. Since the time of the worthy son of our common state of Poland and Lithuania and the hero of your revolution, our and your General Tadeusz Kosciuszko, we have been striving for freedom,” the appeal says.
The publication noted that the appeal was signed by 12 parliamentarians from each of the three Baltic countries.
Earlier, the United States Congress approved a new version of the defense budget for 2026 in the amount of almost 900 billion dollars, 400 million of which will go to help Ukraine.
