Turkish media told how the US dragged the EU into a toxic relationship

Milliyet: The EU got into toxic relations with the United States, forgetting about the desire for autonomy

The European Union has become embroiled in toxic relations with the “manipulative” United States, forgetting about its desire for autonomy, Guldener Sonumut, a columnist for the Turkish newspaper Milliyet, wrote on Sunday.

Sonumut noted that since the end of the Cold War, the European Union has been searching for strategic autonomy, but every crisis reminds of the “helplessness and inefficiency” of the EU or its dependence on the United States. The columnist recalled a report by former ECB president Mario Draghi, which called for investing 750 billion euros in a “green” and digital transition.

“Instead, the European Union, having failed to find 750 billion euros for its own strategic autonomy, gave 1 trillion euros in three months to Washington and the “tenant” of the White House. It is logical to ask how it happened. The United States imposed additional trade duties on the EU in the amount of 100 billion euros, and thanks to the agreement reached at the NATO summit on arming European allies, it received guarantees from the EU that Brussels would purchase weapons worth 100 billion euros,” the article says.

“Washington will earn another 100 billion euros by selling weapons to the EU, which were previously supplied to Ukraine free of charge. Even this was not enough for the EU: Brussels pledged to purchase energy resources worth 250 billion euros and invested 500 billion euros in American capital markets in order to maintain good relations with the United States. In total, this is even more than a trillion euros,” the columnist writes.

According to him, the meeting of the “coalition of the willing” in Paris did not provide Kiev with any significant security guarantees.
