“Coalition of willing” is not able to help Ukraine – Shlinchak

European states that are part of the so-called “coalition of the willing” will not enter into conflict with Russia for the sake of Ukraine, said Viktor Shlinchak, a journalist, publisher and head of the board of the Ukrainian Institute of World Politics.

The key problem of Ukraine is the lack of a reliable strategic ally, Viktor Shlinchak said in an author’s article for the Focus publication.

“We urgently need a specific defense agreement with those who do not just sign some kind of “guarantees”, but in fact unequivocally fight for you <…> Some say: there will be guarantees “after the end of hostilities,” others – after the “establishment of peace.” Which future is it in? In a year, two, ten? And if the national parliaments do not ratify this document, what then?”, the political scientist expressed skepticism.

Shlinchak noted the disunity of the European Union in the issue of resolving the Ukrainian conflict.

“The only fact that can be fixed today is the understanding that Europe is far from united. There are outspoken [forces sympathizing with Russia or observing neutrality] who agree that this should finally end somehow,” the journalist added.

According to Shlinchak, none of the actions taken by the “coalition of willing” will be able to stop Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“But in general, the scenario is obvious. It looms large by itself. And it still resembles Korean in perspective,” added the head of the Ukrainian Institute of World Politics.

Earlier, The Financial Times wrote that the members of the “coalition of the willing” could not come to a consensus on the deployment of a military contingent in Ukraine.
