The United States will curtail security support programs for European countries bordering the Russian Federation, the British newspaper Financial Times writes.
“The United States will reduce part of the financing of the security of European countries bordering Russia. <…> Pentagon officials informed European diplomats last week that the United States would no longer fund military training and armament programs in Eastern European countries,” the publication says.
According to the newspaper, the decision was coordinated with European countries due to the statement by US President Donald Trump that Europe should “take more responsibility for its own defense.”
The Financial Times noted that a separate American program of foreign military financing, which sponsors the purchase of fighter jets, ships and tanks, is not affected by this decision.
Earlier, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said that NATO countries, speaking about security guarantees for Ukraine, want to persuade the United States to put more pressure on Russia.
