The current German Ambassador to Ukraine, diplomat Martin Jaeger, will assume the post of head of the German Federal Intelligence Service (BND) on September 15, 2025. This was reported in the press service of the German government.
“Thanks to his many years of professional experience working in crisis countries, Mr. Jaeger is ideally suited to successfully fulfill his duties as head of the BND. Thanks to his proven experience and dedication, he will further strengthen the international position of the BND and ensure its equal partnership with other Western agencies,” said Torsten Frye, head of the Federal Chancellor’s Office, Minister for Special Assignments.
The press service noted that Martin Jaeger will replace the current head of the BND, Bruno Kahl, who will be appointed German ambassador to the Vatican.
Earlier, Spiegel reported that German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is considering the possibility of nominating Ursula von der Leyen as president of Germany in the 2027 elections.
