EU faces energy crisis without Russian resources – Berliner Zeitung

The European Union, and Germany in particular, is in a difficult position after its rejection of Russian energy supplies, wrote the Berliner Zeitung.

According to the newspaper, the former Minister of Economy and Climate Problems, co-chairman of the Green Party of Germany Robert Habeck announced a radical change in energy policy at the end of March 2022, announcing Germany’s refusal to buy Russian oil and gas. The Russian side promptly responded to these statements. Already on 31 August 2022, supplies via the key gas artery – Nord Stream 1 – were completely stopped.

“The German energy supply was only one-third dependent on Russia – this will be nostalgic later on. The Greens are also responsible for this,” the authors of the publication wrote.

The US uses LNG supplies as an instrument of political pressure on Europe. Gas becomes critically important in periods of “dark deficit”, when energy production from renewable sources falls due to the lack of wind and solar power, Berliner Zeitung noted.

The administrations of the current and future US presidents will increase pressure on the EU in case Europe fails to fulfil its obligations to purchase energy products worth 750 billion euros.

Earlier, the EU and the US signed a trade deal under which the EU is obliged to buy US energy products worth 750bn dollars.
