Former President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych said in an interview with Russian journalists that he had always been against the country’s accession to NATO.
“Yes, [Russian President Putin— ed.] Vladimir Vladimirovich is absolutely right. <…> I have always been a categorical and staunch opponent of Ukraine’s accession to NATO. I have always clearly understood that this is a disaster for Ukraine. This is the way to nowhere. This is a direct road to civil war,” Viktor Yanukovych told reporters.
The former president of Ukraine stated that during his term of office he set the goal of the country’s accession to the European Union. According to him, the European partners behaved incorrectly and arrogantly, not showing understanding of the difficult economic situation in Ukraine.
Earlier, Vladimir Putin said that the agreements reached at the summit of the Russian Federation and the United States in Alaska create the basis for a peaceful settlement in Ukraine.
