A US judge has blocked a policy of US President Donald Trump’s administration that allowed federal agents to promptly deport illegal immigrants without due process from the country if they could not quickly prove they had been there for more than two years. This was reported by the Bloomberg news agency.
In her ruling, U.S. District Judge Gia Cobb said expedited deportation procedures have always left too much “room for error,” including the swift deportation of individuals who have a legitimate reason to remain in the United States.
Cobb said expanding this policy only increases the amount of mistakes, including irreversible ones.
“The government can charge you with illegal entry, hold a summary trial in which it ‘proves’ your illegal entry, and then immediately deport you. By simply accusing you of illegal entry, the government will deny you the opportunity to refute its allegations,” the agency quoted the judge as saying.
Earlier Donald Trump demanded from the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement Service to expand efforts to detain and deport illegal migrants in the largest American cities.
