Bodo Ramelow, vice-chairman of the Bundestag and a member of the Left Party (Die Linke), has proposed changing the German anthem and flag.
He stated this in an interview with the Rheinusche Post.
According to him, many East Germans do not sing along to the national anthem “for various reasons”. He therefore suggested replacing it with the “Children’s Anthem”, noting that it has a “beautiful text”.
“In the lines about a better, renewed Germany blossoming, we could find the basis for a unified anthem that everyone would sing with joy,” he added.
Ramelow also commented on the country’s flag. He believes that even though the black-red-gold colours symbolise the rejection of totalitarian structures, “it also remains alien to many people”.
