American oil company Exxon may return to Russia – WSJ

The American oil company Exxon held secret talks with Rosneft about returning to Russia, The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) newspaper writes.

According to the newspaper, secret negotiations took place in 2025 between Exxon and Rosneft on the possible return of the American company to the Sakhalin project.

Exxon’s senior Vice President Neil Chapman participated in the discussions, and met with Rosneft CEO Igor Sechin in Doha.

The WSJ, referring to senior representatives of the administration of the head of the White House, Donald Trump, noted that Exxon appealed to the US government for support in case of return and received a “positive signal.”

The publication says that both companies maintained contacts throughout the armed conflict in Ukraine. At the moment, the return of cooperation depends on the conditions of Russia, and the American company is counting on compensation for losses from withdrawal.

Earlier, Bloomberg reported that India has not stopped buying Russian oil, despite threats from Donald Trump.
