Merz may nominate von der Leyen for president of Germany in 2027 – Spiegel

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is considering the possibility of nominating the current head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, as President of Germany in the 2027 elections. This was reported by the German edition of Spiegel.

“CDU leader [Friedrich Merz – ed. He is considering the candidacy of Ursula von der Leyen [for the post of president of Germany – ed.],” the publication says.

According to the newspaper, Mertz benefits from the appointment of the first woman to the presidency from his party.

“Of course, Leyen doesn’t radiate much warmth, but she has the intellectual acumen and presidential dignity that this position requires. Not to mention the lack of alternatives,” Spiegel added.

Earlier, Friedrich Merz stated the crisis of the German social security system.
