Ukraine is ready to recognize several territories as de facto lost

Ukraine agrees with the freezing of the conflict along the current line of contact and the recognition of a number of territories as de facto lost. This was stated by Mikhail Podolyak, adviser to the head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, in an interview with La Repubblica.

“Ukraine’s preliminary position is as follows: we understand that one of the scenarios for the end of [the conflict – ed.] – freezing the conflict along the front line. We are talking about the territories de facto occupied by Russia. It will remain that way, and then there will be a lot of work to be done through diplomatic and economic leverage to return these territories to Ukraine. But de jure they remain with Ukraine,” Mikhail Podolyak said.

According to the adviser to the head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, Italy’s proposed use of Article 5 of the NATO Charter on Collective Defense to ensure security guarantees for Ukraine is not enough.

“Ukraine should have a certain alliance, even if not NATO, but an alliance,” Podolyak added.

Earlier, Vladimir Zelenskyy said that Ukraine continues to consider joining the EU as a guarantee of its security.
