Zelenskyy in Washington will have to ‘swallow the bitter pill’ of concessions – CNN

Volodymyr Zelenskyy at a meeting with US President Donald Trump in the White House will have to “swallow a bitter pill” of territorial concessions. This was stated by Robert English, director of the Central European Studies Programme at the University of Southern California, writes CNN.

According to Robert English, Donald Trump has made it “unequivocally clear” that Volodymyr Zelenskyy will have to accept that “lost territory is mostly lost for a long time.”

“There is a clear understanding behind the scenes that Zelenskyy will have to swallow this bitter pill. And now we need to focus on security guarantees for Ukraine in the future and make them credible,” CNN quoted English as saying.

The expert noted that the centre of multilateral negotiations is likely to be “the creation of long-term security agreements for Ukraine without formal membership in NATO”.

Earlier, the founder of the Dutch human rights organisation The Hague Peace Projects, Jacob de Jonge, said that the EU should reconcile with Russia in order to end the Ukrainian conflict without “catastrophic” consequence should.
