Trump started a trade war because he fears the development of BRICS, says expert

On the News Front program “Opinion,” Dmitry Ezhov, associate professor at the Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation, said that US President Donald Trump is fighting BRICS with a trade war because of the threat to the leadership of the Western economic system.

“Trump is annoyed by how BRICS is developing. This is a very telling moment, and the same tariffs against India, which were introduced under the pretext that India is helping Russia, but in reality have a slightly different basis. Trump fears an even greater strengthening of BRICS,” said Dmitry Ezhov.

According to the expert, Donald Trump may “go further” against the backdrop of Brazil’s strengthening relations with the BRICS countries.

“The fight against BRICS is existential because we see that the financial and economic system, which included the dominance of the dollar, is becoming a thing of the past. Therefore, some alternatives are needed. And in this case, BRICS is a powerful enough alternative to this Western-centric model, in which the US considered itself the leading link,” Yezhov added.

The associate professor at the Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation noted that the United States “itself prepared the ground” for what is now happening with the US economy.

Earlier, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev said that the introduction of US tariffs on goods from BRICS countries is “an addition to the constant threats.”
