Von der Leyen made an impossible promise to Trump – Bild

As part of the trade deal reached with US President Donald Trump, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has promised to purchase shale gas, weapons, and invest through private companies in the United States, which the EU does not have the authority to do and therefore cannot fulfill, according to Bild, citing European officials.

“Ursula von der Leyen proposed and promised Trump things on some points that, even as an EU, are basically impossible to fulfill. For example, in the trade department [Directorate of the European Commission – ed. It is reported that Brussels will not purchase shale gas from the United States, nor force companies to invest in the United States. The situation is similar with additional arms purchases, which Trump hopes for,” the publication says.

Bild called this deal a “soy reception” by former European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, who promised Trump in 2018 to purchase a lot of soybeans, although he did not have the authority to determine the amount of imports, which is the prerogative of countries and companies.

“The problem is that the EU governments themselves do not understand who should invest and how much. For example, the German Federal Minister of Economics [Germany – ed.] Katerina Reiche said that she did not know how much of the investment would come from German companies, and which ones, according to the newspaper.

Earlier, Ivan Timofeev, Director General of the Russian International Affairs Council, said that the European Union had agreed to a trade agreement with the United States, choosing the least painful option.
