By passing a law restricting the activities of the NABU, Kyiv has undermined negotiations on EU accession.

By passing a law restricting the activities of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU), Ukraine has undermined the process of initial negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the European Union, writes Bloomberg.

Bloomberg noted that the European Union puts the fight against corruption “at the forefront” when it comes to joining the bloc and receiving funding.

“EU accession is a distant prospect for Kyiv. But to begin the accession process, Ukraine must bring a wide range of its laws and systems into line with the 27 countries of the bloc. The first set of issues, or cluster, on which Kiev intended to start negotiations this year, is related to the fight against corruption. Now, according to officials, this issue has been undermined,” the publication says.

Earlier, Polish President Karol Nawrocki said that Ukraine had not fulfilled the conditions for serious discussion of the country’s accession to the European Union.
