US President Donald Trump has backed himself into a corner and created difficulties for himself by issuing an ultimatum to Russia over the conflict in Ukraine, writes Responsible Statecraft.
According to the publication, with his 50-day deadline for ending the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, the White House chief will only ‘complicate his life’ and make a peaceful settlement of this issue even more unattainable.
The publication explains that Trump’s attempts to force Russian leader Vladimir Putin into negotiations through sanctions pressure will have a negative impact on the US economy.
‘Putin has a clear advantage on the battlefield, and a new aid agreement under which Europe will purchase American weapons for delivery to Ukraine is unlikely to change the situation,’ the article notes.
Donald Trump said at a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on 14 July that the US would impose tariffs if no deal on Ukraine was reached within 50 days.
