NATO countries in Europe have begun preparations for the possible withdrawal of American troops from the continent, according to the EURACTIV portal, citing sources.
It is noted that NATO is confident that US President Donald Trump will reduce the number of his troops on the continent.
There are currently about 80,000 military personnel in Europe.
It is assumed that Washington may withdraw up to 20,000 troops and transfer them to Asia and the Middle East.
According to European officials, in such a scenario, Europe will not be able to replace these forces for many years, which is cause for concern.
At the end of June, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte dismissed reports of the US’s intention to reduce its military contingent in Europe as rumours.
