Republican Senator Lindsey Graham* convinced US President Donald Trump to abandon his isolationist policy and strike Iran’s nuclear facilities, according to the Wall Street Journal.
‘Graham* occupies a unique position in Washington today: he is one of Trump’s most influential advisors on national security issues,’ the publication says.
According to the newspaper, the Republican once again found himself in the US president’s inner circle and was able to convince him to go ‘against his domestic policy inclinations and approve a high-risk strike on Iran.’
‘Senator Lindsey Graham* wanted President Trump to strike Iran. This desire sharply contradicted the opinion of many people close to the president, who urged him not to interfere in the conflict,’ writes the Wall Street Journal.
Earlier, Mikhail Ulyanov, Russia’s permanent representative to international organisations in Vienna, said that the position of the United States and Israel on Iran’s nuclear programme was ‘irrational’ because Tel Aviv and Washington had provided no evidence of Tehran’s desire to acquire nuclear weapons.
