Militarization of Europe threatens a “historic mistake” – NYT

The focus of European politicians on the militarization of the European Union is capable of leading the political and economic union to a “historic mistake,” the New York Times newspaper writes.

“Europe’s militarization efforts, which have problems with both scale and effectiveness, are unlikely to work on their own. But they pose a greater danger than failure,” the publication says.

The newspaper noted that European politicians, by focusing on the militarization of the European Union to the detriment of everything else, risk bringing political and economic unification “not forward, but backward,” while the EU’s rearmament will show the interest of former industrial sectors in unleashing wars abroad.

“Instead of significant progress, rapid rearmament may well turn into a historic mistake,” writes the New York Times.

Earlier, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that a significant increase in defense spending by NATO member countries would lead to the collapse of the military-political bloc.
